While smells in the bathroom might not be something that you want to talk about, there are some smells that you shouldn’t have to deal with. There are situations that could arise that causes odors that even could be harmful to your health. So what could the cause be?

One common problem in bathrooms that aren’t used often is that the water in the p-trap evaporates, allowing sewer gas to escape into your home. This gas can cause all kinds of ill health effects, such as headaches, nausea, and similar issues. If this is happening in your home, you might need to install a device that will keep the p-trap topped off, or you could get into the habit of running water in there regularly.

Another common issue comes from an exhaust fan that doesn’t do its job. This could lead to mold growth and stale air. Replacing your fan might make your bathroom smell fresh again.

Did you know that your clothes dryer could turn into a fire hazard? It can happen when there is a buildup of lint inside of the duct that vents the hot air from the dryer outside. This will hinder airflow which could make the dryer overheat, and it will provide fuel for a potential fire. This is why it is important that your dryer exhaust goes through a duct that is as straight as possible and vents outside your home. If there are sharp turns or compressed areas of the duct, lint could start collecting there.

Another problem that could arise from your dryer not being properly vented is if you have it set up to vent inside of your home. It is important to remember that the steam coming out of the dryer contains a lot of water from the wet clothes and if this is released inside of your home it could condensate and cause water damage or mold.

Getting up into the attic can be a little bit tricky for some homeowners. Instead of a stair, they have an attic pull-down ladder to access the attic, and if this isn’t installed correctly, it could pose a serious risk. So, how should it be installed?

First, it is important that it is firmly attached to the surrounding joists with sufficiently long fasteners. There will be a large force affecting the ladder and if it isn’t mounted correctly it could pull out and damage your home and injure you.

You should also be careful about the way in which you use the ladder. The joint is the weakest point, so if the ladder is too tall, it will be at an angle where a lot of pressure is put on the joint.

If at all possible, the safest way to get things up into the attic is to have someone hand you the items while you stand on the ladder. That way you are straining the ladder as briefly as possible, and it is safer to climb the ladder with both hands free.

Have you ever gone out to your garbage can early in the morning only to find it covered in maggots? It is pretty disgusting, and you might wonder what could cause it. It is good to be aware what the cause is since solving the problem will only be possible when you remove it.

As you probably are aware, maggots are the larvae of flies. They will eventually grow up and fly out of there, but how did they end up in your garbage in the first place? Well, the answer is pretty simple. A fly somehow made it into your garbage can and laid eggs in there. The problem with garbage is that you constantly put things in there that flies are attracted to. They can smell organic materials from far away, and once they’re in there, laying eggs near a source of food is ideal. Within a day the eggs will hatch and maggots will start eating their way through your garbage.

Usually, the maggots will disappear the next time you empty out the garbage, but if you want to play it safe, using boiling water can kill the maggots.

Keeping moisture out of your home can seem like a constant battle, but it is a very important thing if you want to keep your home for a long time. Moisture intrusion can do all kinds of damage to your home, and it can harm your health as well as the structure of the home. The protection against moisture intrusion starts from the bottom up. Your home should have vapor barriers installed that will prevent moisture intrusion. Vapor barriers come in several different forms. They could be made from polyethylene plastic sheets, paper, or even paint. No matter which type of vapor barrier it is that you have, it is very important that the coverage is complete. A rip in a plastic sheet or a patch of missed paint will both have the same effect. They will allow water to intrude into your home and lead to issues.

The paint is usually in the form of a primer, letting you paint over it with the paint of your choice.

There are things in every home that you should stay away from to keep yourself safe. You probably realize most of them are dangerous, such as electricity and heaters, but something that most might not think of adding to a list of dangers in the home is sewage. While we all find sewage disgusting, exposure to it can cause serious diseases like Dysentry and Diahrrea.

Fortunately, sewage exposure is rare, but it can happen when there is a serious blockage in your sewage pipes. You could end up with sewage backing up through your downstairs toilets and this would be a very serious situation that needs quick remediation. Sewage is not only harmful to the human body, but it can also be very harmful to your home. As soon as you have an issue like this, you should be quick to contact a plumber to help get your water flowing again, and he might suggest getting a water damage remediation company involved as well.

When you sit down on the toilet, does the seat slide all over the place? You might have gotten used to this happening, but it isn’t really necessary. Replacing your toilet seat is not a complicated process, so as long as you are careful not to get contaminated and avoid dropping tools down the toilet, you should be good to go.

For most toilet seats, there are only 2 bolts that attach the seat to the toilet bowl. These can sometimes be tricky to reach, and some have covers over the bolts that need to be popped off. You might need both a wrench on top of the bolt as well as on the nut underneath, but some seats only have the nut holding them in place.

If you don’t want to bring the seat in to compare for size, you will be happy to know that there really only are 2 different types of seats – regular and elongated. If you figure out which one of the two you have you’re good to go.

When attaching the new seat to your toilet, there is really only one thing to keep in mind: Don’t over-tighten. This could damage your bowl and end up becoming a lot more difficult and expensive to fix.

Is your cement walkway all messed up? It can happen because of the ground shifting or because of mistakes made when the slab was poured, but it can be unsightly or even dangerous as a tripping hazard.

Of course, you probably worry about the work and cost that would be involved in replacing the slab, so you might be happy to hear that there is a cheaper alternative that can give you the right result. It is called mudjacking.

Mudjacking can be performed by a trained professional, and it is done fairly quickly, especially when you compare it to tearing up your old slab and pouring a new one. It is accomplished by drilling holes into your existing concrete slab and then pumping a mixture of cement, dirt and water underneath the slab until it is leveled out. This is not something that you can do on your own, but you will need someone that knows how to identify possible dangers such as underlying pipes or electrical wires.

Do you know which appliance in your home works the hardest? There are many different appliances that run day in and day out, and among those, you will find your water heater. Water heaters will keep your water hot all day long whether you are using it or not. There are also contaminants and minerals in your water that can collect inside of your water heater. What all this adds up to is going to be a water heater that is prone to clogging up and leaking. This is the reason why you should make sure to have your water heater on your maintenance list for your home.
If you notice any leaks around your water heater, they should be looked into. It might be necessary to get a professional to take a look at your water heater, but there are a few things you can do to keep your water heater running well for longer.
The pressure release valve should be checked periodically, and it can be done simply by opening the valve and making sure that steam is vented and that the valve snaps back after it is released.
There is also a drain valve where you can get the sediment out of the water heater. These simple care items will let you keep your water heater in good shape.

Water is always going to be a problem for homeowners, no matter how it makes it into your building, so it is important to keep up the fight. If you have issues with water intrusion in your basement, you might have a sump pump installed to keep it out. A sump pump sits in a trench below the surface of the floor and will activate when the trench starts filling up with water, such as during a heavy rainstorm. It is important to ensure that it operates properly well in advance of bad weather. You should also have a battery backup for the pump since power outages in conjunction with a storm could have bad results otherwise.

To test if the pump works properly, you can pour some water into the trench to make sure it starts up. A common issue is that the float that turns the pump on can get stuck against the wall of the trench when the water dries up, so keep an eye out for that.

Your pump needs to discharge the water far away from your home, and there should be proper grading directing it away from the home so that the pump won’t need to pump the same water back out over and over again.
