It’s clear to see the importance of safe, clean and reliable drinking water. Most of us take it for granted that we will automatically have a steady supply to our home, but what do we really know about where it is coming from? Should it always be assumed that it is safe for drinking? Here are a few things to think about
Where does your water come from?
The answer is generally determined by your location. Areas that are more densely populated like large towns and cities, likely use water that comes from a reservoir. This water source, referred to as a surface water source, could be some distance away from the area it is supplying.
People who live in more rural areas, however, will likely use water that comes from a well. In these cases, the source of the well water is generally a natural underground reservoir or aquifer.
Whether your water is from a well or a surface water source, determining how safe it is to drink requires more than simply looking at the water itself. A very important factor is the surroundings of the body of water. For example, is the surrounding land used for farmland, or is it mostly industrial? The term used for this area is the water shed.
