Carbon monoxide detectors are made specifically for detecting that gas in the air. It is a very deadly gas, but it has no color or odor, so the only way to detect it is with an alarm. It is very deadly, and it can kill an adult human in a few minutes. The situation is made worse by nausea and dizziness that is caused by the gas as well, making it difficult to think clearly enough to make it out of a bad situation.
Carbon monoxide is caused when things are burned with an insufficient oxygen supply, so it is a good idea to have a CO alarm at any location where you have appliances that burn gas as well as near your fireplace if you have one.
