Getting up into the attic can be a little bit tricky for some homeowners. Instead of a stair, they have an attic pull-down ladder to access the attic, and if this isn’t installed correctly, it could pose a serious risk. So, how should it be installed?
First, it is important that it is firmly attached to the surrounding joists with sufficiently long fasteners. There will be a large force affecting the ladder and if it isn’t mounted correctly it could pull out and damage your home and injure you.
You should also be careful about the way in which you use the ladder. The joint is the weakest point, so if the ladder is too tall, it will be at an angle where a lot of pressure is put on the joint.
If at all possible, the safest way to get things up into the attic is to have someone hand you the items while you stand on the ladder. That way you are straining the ladder as briefly as possible, and it is safer to climb the ladder with both hands free.
